Pitch Perfect returns to the big screens – and it does not disappoint. Filled to the brim with exciting, blood pumping mashups, an eargasmic riff-off and a new antagonist (Das Sound Machine – or DSM), it is the perfect sequel to the first installment.
That Viral Factor Remember the “Cups” song that went viral a few years ago? The one that spawned covers upon covers upon covers? The franchise returns with a new challenge so fellow aca lovers get your game face on for round 2. #coverit, those hands better be ready to clap up a storm.
Oh, the Feels! While the plot and script bring nothing new to the table, it was still enjoyable. Packed with light-hearted jokes, the awkwardness of first loves, sudden realisations, witticisms; coupled with bonding sessions at the campfire (yay for much needed sisterhood feels) and the usual shenanigans, the movie is pretty much guaranteed to tug at your heartstrings regardless of whether you’re male or female, young or old.
Waxing Lyrical The anticipated sequel adds a little spark of originality. Penned by new blood and Bella legacy, Emily Junk-Hardon (played by Hailee Steinfeld), "Flashlight" emphasises the power of companionship through trying times, which ties in with the plot quite nicely.
Have a listen and tell us your verdict (note: this is not the movie version):
Harmony The set list this time is stellar – the teams cover a wide range of music from the classics, to 21st century pop, all in their true blue style of course. The music used might have been the deal breaker here (discordant messes happen so often with that many genres) but Pitch Perfect 2 blends it all too well, comparable to its predecessor.
Esteemed Appearance The movie had us a little starstruck when Internet a capella sensation, Pentatonix, appeared on the big screen! Granted, it's a tad bit too short a cameo but hey, we'll take what we can get before their concert in Singapore, happening on the 1st of June at Star Vista’s The Star Theatre.
We hope you've booked tickets, because we're pretty sure they'll aca-blow the roof off.
TL;DR: Who cares about acoustics when you can rely on the raw power of the human voice? While your weekend (or weekday, whatever floats your boat) hours away with some good-spirited humour and harmless fun.
Pitch Perfect 2 gets a solid 3.5/5 from the Pique Team.
